Silhouettes have been a form of affordable portraiture for over 300 years and were first produced as hand drawn paintings. They were black with white paint (called scraping) to highlight certain features and were popular amongst well-known artists as a way of supplementing their income whilst working on grander projects. Often they would be invited to country homes to attend parties and paint their guests.
